Lets make compost.

Composting is not difficult and it is an ideal way to recycle many items used in the home and garden. It also produces  a rich, dark, crumbly and sweet-smelling mixture that is full of nutrients to use on your plants, veg and trees,
Firstly you need to decide what type of container you are going to use. There are many types of bins that can be bought or you can make your own.  The cheapest way is to just build a heap in your garden and cover with some polythene, cardboard or an old carpet.
Once you have decided what you are going to use you need to have some knowledge about what to compost.  I have found it best to put a few twigs at the bottom of the compost pile to ensure air circulation. Then I add layers of green and brown items for example brown leaves and green grass cuttings. I also add vegetable peelings, egg shells, chicken manure, weeds, cardboard, tea bags. hair, contents of hoover bag. the list is endless.Anything that was once living will compost but meat, dairy and cooked foods should not be used.
It is best not to use too much water in your compost because it can turn sour and cause an unpleasant odour.
Your compost can be ready in as little as eight weeks or more commonly it takes about a year to break down.

To gather items from my kitchen to compost I have a  5 litre Kompost Kaddy  which I bought from Wikaniko http://bit.ly/Xw0j5b    I line the Kaddy with a Kompost Caddy Bag that costs only £3.79 for a roll of 20 . http://bit.ly/ZOxkxp
I keep the bag in the container in the kitchen and when it is full I put it into the compost heap. The bag itself composts which is great. The joy of having the Kaddy and the bags is that it prevents flies gathering in the kitchen and plus saves me having to handle waste. I can just pull the bag out of the bin and put it into the compost.
So now you have the basics give it a go. There is something rewarding using compost in your garden that you know has come from stuff that you would normally throw away.
PS did you know that human urine is high in nutrients and good for your compost.

New Wikaniko presentation

Staff at Wikaniko have been working really hard to put together this new presentation about our company so please take a look. If you are interested in becoming a distributor then please contact us using the form provided in the presentation.
http://col436.wix.com/greeneropportunity

Basically we are offering you the opportunity to set up your own business selling good quality reasonably priced  eco friendly products. Some distributors sell the products by giving out catalogues in their local area and go to markets and others purely work on line. When you join Wikaniko you will receive training and support from your team leader and others. We are always there to give support and answer your questions.
At the moment we have a special offer where the usual joining fee is postponed for six months to give new members the opportunity to taste and see. There is a small monthly admin fee but this is under four pounds. The amount you earn is very dependant upon how much work you put into selling and recruiting people to join your team.
Like many people I have to admit that I was sceptical about this offer and would usually run a mile if multi level marketing was mentioned. But as we knew that people who own this company I thought that I would give it a go and I have not regretted my decision. I have worked hard and I have made money so I have nothing to complain about. Plus I have been buying eco friendly products for myself at a reduced rate because I am a distributor.
So if you are interested and live in the UK or Europe then have a look at the presentation and see what you think.

Mulching

Hi everyone
Hope that you are all well. I am good and feeling quite at peace with myself. I have had a troublesome few days with family disagreements and upset but it all seems sorted now. I have decided that I really hate emails and texts as a means of communication because they are so impersonal and do not give a real sense of the emotions about is being said. Plus people often say things in emails and texts that they would not say face to face. Sign of the times I'm afraid plus that I am getting old.
Anyway life here in Spain is ticking over and the weather is okay although we do seem to be having more rain and wind than normal. Today I have been out in the garden veg plot weeding and checking my veg. I've just picked a few mangetout which I think that I might shred and have in a salad. Unfortunately the green beans are not growing well and are covered in black fly. I think that I will leave them because they seem focussed on the green beans and leaving the other veg alone. I'm really pleased that the turnip seeds are sprouting. I've never grown turnips before but I really love crushed carrot and turnip with my Sunday roast.
Because the ground here is so hard, especially in the hot summer, its not easy to grow parsnips and carrots so I have just planted seeds in a compost in a tub in the hope that they will grow.
I've noticed that we have  tomato's  turning red which is great. Everything is really early this year.
To try and stop the weeds I have just covered the veg plot with a mulch using grass cuttings. We will see whether it works but if nothing else the grass cuttings will add nutrients to the soil.
Well I will plough on working and get back to you all later.

Features:

One way action keeps Baby Dry
Makes nappy laundering easy!
Once soiled, simply flush down the loo
100 sheets per roll

Review
Some people ask why I use both paper and fleece liners in my boy's nappies. I like paper liners for poops! They really help to protect the nappy underneath from the stickiness. We cut the liners in half for the smaller nappies making them incredibly good value. (Posted on 13/04/2013)

Biowashball

Biowashball

http://www.wikaniko.com/index.php?distributor=greenerearth&redirect=http://www.wikaniko.com/shop/laundry/biowashball.html

Compared to a normal washing process, Biowashball reduces risks of allergic reactions linked to the use of detergent, eliminates germs, contributes to well-being, saves money and protects nature.
  • Well-being: no side effects due to detergent residue on your linen.
  • Antibacterial: eliminates pathogen germs.
  • Economical: eliminates detergents (a saving of approximately 1000 pounds over a 3 - 4 year period) on detergents and electricity combined (washing at 50°C maximum for all your linen, even your white linen).
  • Ecological: (without phosphates) protects water and ground water.
Biowashball is environmentally friendly.

How the Biowashball works:
Using Biowashball can eliminate the use of detergents. You therefore avoid risks of allergic reactions due to detergent residues on clothing or linen. It safeguards your linen from bleaching, oxidation, caused by chlorine diluted in water. Fabrics remain elastic. It is the powerful remote infrared rays emitted by Biowashball ceramics which break the hydrogen molecules of water to increase molecular movement. This gives water a high penetration capacity and improves its washing properties. The Biowashball emits negative ions which weaken the adherence of dirt on fabric so that it is easily removed without the use of detergent. The Biowashball has a pH of about 10 which is equivalent to that of an ordinary chemical detergent. This treats grease, organic or chemical stains efficiently. The Biowashball eliminates chlorine compounds in water and decreases its superficial pressure, increasing therefore its washing power. Finally, the Biowashball eliminates pathogen germs in the water of your washing machine, giving clean and healthy linen. Biowashball has an antibacterial effect and eliminates bad odours.
Life span:
It can be used for 3 years on the basis of one 4 kg laundry per day. Over 4 kg use 2 Biowashballs . To safeguard its efficiency: place the Biowashball in the sun for 1 hour every month to regenerate the ceramic micro balls.
Tip:
You can also place an Biowashball in the refrigerator too. It helps maintain the freshness of fruit, vegetables, meat and fish.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Intro
An essential oil is a concentrated liquid containing volatile aroma compounds
from aromatic plants. It is usually distilled, sometimes expressed or solvent
extracted. Eucalyptus essential oil is said to be antibacterial, disinfectant and
an analgesic. It has been used to relieve coughs, colds, and other such respiratory
troubles. It soothes muscle and joint pains, and helps to heal wounds,
burns, ulcers and insect bites. In aromatherapy eucalyptus is said to
promote activity, vitality, and energy
Usage
For respiratory troubles, a few drops of this oil placed on a
cloth can be inhaled through the mouth and exhaled through
the nose for half a minute. It is applied directly on sores, rashes
and insect bites. Add a few drops to your bath water to feel
invigorated and refreshed. Soak your sore feet in a basin of
warm water with 4-5 drops of this oil for relief. A few drops of
oil in a diffuser is said to kill germs and airborne bacteria, a
good idea for a sickroom. Eucalyptus essential oil is for
external use only; always consult an authorised practitioner
when using it as a health remedy.
Ancient Wisdom
Essential oils have been understood to have played a role in
healing in ancient times in Egypt, China, and other parts of the
world. They are said to be the oldest form of medicine and
cosmetic, since they are distilled from plants, not involving
complicated processes or machinery, but an art nonetheless. For
their healing and aromatic properties, they were considered more
valuable than gold to the ancients.

Jasmine Dilute Essential Oil

Jasmine Dilute Essential Oil
Intro
Jasmine is a delicate, evergreen climber native to China and
India with small, white, star-shaped flowers, which are picked
at night, when their fragrance is at its most powerful. Jasmine
essential oil has a sweet, exotic and richly floral smell. It is
expensive, as its distillation is more elaborate than for most
oils. It is used to deeply relax, lift depression and increase
confidence. We sell a pre-made dilution of this essential oil.
Usage
This oil is said to soothe the nerves and produce a feeling of
confidence and optimism, while also restoring energy. It reduces
childbirth time by strengthening contractions and easing pain. It is
believed to relieve impotence, frigidity, and premature ejaculation
due to its soothing and calming properties. It helps cough and
laryngitis and is also useful in a massage oil to ease muscle pain,
sprains, and stiff limbs. Jasmine oil tones dry, oily, or sensitive
skin, increases elasticity and is said to reduce stretch marks.
Ancient Wisdom
The jasmine has been considered a holy flower in India for
hundreds of years and is strung together to make garlands for Hindu
gods and Goddesses still today. Jasmine is commonly worn in
the hair by Indian women and is one of the main flowers in wedding
garlands as well. According to a myth, the sun god, Surya,
rejected a princess’s love and she was so heartbroken that she
killed herself. From her ashes scattered on the
ground, a jasmine plant grew. Since the sun god
caused her so much pain, the jasmine flower only
bloomed and released its perfume at night.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
Intro
Ylang Ylang is a large tree native to the far eastern countries
of Malaysia, Philippines, and Indonesia. Its yellow flowers are
strongly fragrant and have long trailing petals. The essential oil
made from it is available in abundance and is therefore the
least expensive aromatic oil but it is highly favoured for its fragrance in the
perfume and cosmetics industries, and is also used in the
food industry today.
Usage
According to science, Ylang Ylang essential oil is a mental
stimulant. In contrast, the world of aromatherapy considers
this oil to be one of the best at relaxing the mind and the body.
Simply smelling it is supposed to help lower blood pressure.
Taking a bath with the oil or using it in a massage oil
naturally enhances the relaxation experience. It is used to
relieve stress, depression, shock, or anxiety. When used as
a hair tonic, it is supposed to balance oil production. Be
warned, though, that high concentrations of ylang-ylang can
cause headaches or nausea.

Ancient Wisdom
Ylang Ylang means the flower of flowers in Malay, and was traditionally
thought of as an aphrodisiac and a relaxing fragrance, so the flowers
of this tree were strewn on the marriage bed of a newly married couple
in Indonesia. Muslim women used to burn this oil to scent their harems,
the part of the palace reserved for women. In China, the fragrance was
used to purify the robes of the mandarin. Ylang Ylang essential oil has
been associated with perfumes and relaxation for a long time.

Psychic medium

Hi everyone
Last night our friends treated us to a night out. We went to a lovely restaurant where a psychic medium was doing readings. I am rather sceptical about all this type of thing but I don't have totally closed mind set. Once we were settled we were asked to pick a flower from the pots in the court yard of the restaurant and then given a raffle ticket. The medium then drew a ticket from a bucket. My number came up the first time and I was rather nervous not knowing what to expect. I told the man my name. He took the flower which was a pansy and he then began to tell me about how I felt and when things will change for me. To be honest my nervousness prevented me from taking in a lot that he was saying. He then went on to talk about my mother and other people who have died. Being rather sceptical and able to rationalise much of what he said I wasn't convinced that he was for real. However as he progressed he asked who has the kidney?. This really shook me because my mum was on dialysis for 20 years and more recently my younger brother had a kidney transplant. There is no way this man could have known about the kidney problems in my family. I had not spoken about this whilst I was at the restaurant and he had no knowledge of me or my friends prior to this evening.
Whilst I could rationalise most of what he said for example having a ring belonging to my mother which I think most women have a piece of jewellery from the deceased mother, the kidney thing left me speechless.
So now at the age of 60years I think that I maybe need to stop being so sceptical and learn more about this psychic stuff.

Soldier killed in Woolwich London

Last night we watched in horror as the story about the killing of a soldier in Woolwich London unravelled. This incident really touched us as we used to live very near to where the incident happened and still have friends living in the area.
As the night progressed a friend messaged me to say that a crowd, some wearing balaclava's  had gathered in Woolwich town centre and seemed set on making trouble. The news today reported that indeed there had been trouble with the gang throwing things at the police. Looking at the various facebook pages that have developed since this incident it has brought to the surface a lot of racial hatred towards Muslims.
Whilst I feel great sadness for the young man who died and his family I suspect some protesters are just jumping on the band wagon to express their racial views. I'm pretty sure that in the next few weeks there will be unrest in South London.
At the moment the two young men who committed this horrendous crime are in separate hospitals in London. Both men were shot by the police. There appears to be no information about these young men or their motives for committing this crime but their words at the crime scene that they killed the man because British soldiers  killed Muslims every day.suggests that it was  a terror attack. Whether these men acted alone or are part of a wider network will not be known until further investigations take place.
The police have a lot of work to do and in reality the last thing they need is groups such as the English Defence Group and other racist organisations causing trouble.

All About Cradle Cap

A superb remedy for cradle cap, made from pure Aloe Vera gel and Rosehip oil from the mountains in Chile.

This remedy has been used by Spanish mothers for hundreds of years. Why not try it?

http://www.wikaniko.com/index.php?distributor=greenerearth&redirect=http://www.wikaniko.com/shop/cradle-cap-lotion.html

How to use:

Put a few drops on baby's scalp, and gently massage into the affected area. Take as long as you want, baby will love the attention. Leave the treatment on the scalp (unless you have used far too much  - in which case gently wipe off with a towel)

Gently, with a fine-toothed  baby comb, lift and work out all the loose flakes that you can. Do not pick at bits that are attached to the scalp.

If the build-up of skin is very bad, it will take two or three times to get it all. Don't do everything in one day - you don't need to.

See the document attached to find out all about cradle cap.

This might seem to be a small bottle, but a little goes a long way!

50ml

All about Cradle Cap

Cradle cap (infantile or neonatal seborrhoeic dermatitis, also known as crusta lactea, milk
crust, honeycomb disease) is a yellowish, patchy, greasy, scaly and crusty skin rash that
occurs on the scalp of recently born babies. It is usually not itchy, and does not bother the
baby.
Cradle cap most commonly begins sometime in the first 3 months. Similar
symptoms in older children are more likely to be dandruff than cradle cap.
The rash is often prominent around the ear, the eyebrows or the eyelids. It
may appear in other locations as well, where it is called seborrhoeic
dermatitis rather than cradle cap. Some countries use the term pityriasis
capitis for cradle cap. It is extremely common, with about half of all babies
affected. Most of them have a mild version of the disorder. Severe cradle
cap is rare Causes
Cradle cap is not caused by a bacterial infection, allergy, or from poor hygiene. Doctors are
not in agreement as to the causes, but the two most common hypotheses include fungal
infection and overactive sebaceous glands.
In many cases, what is commonly called cradle cap is actually a fungal infection. This
infection may be related to antibiotics given to the mother just before the infant's birth, or the
infection could be related to antibiotics routinely given to infants during the first week of life.
Antibiotics kill both harmful bacteria as well as the helpful bacteria that prevent the growth of
yeast, which is why people who are prone to fungal infections will often discover a fungal
infection after taking a round of antibiotics. In infants, the fungus is mostly likely to appear on
the scalp (cradle cap), diaper area (fungal diaper rash, jock itch), ear (fungal ear infection, or
an ear infection that does not respond to antibiotics),or in the mouth (thrush).
Another common cause of cradle cap appears to be a common manifestation of biotin
insufficiency. This may be due, in part, to the influence of biotin on fatty acid biosynthesis.
Possibly it has to do with overactive sebaceous glands in the skin of newborn babies, due to
the mother's hormones still in the baby's circulation. The glands release a greasy substance that makes old skin cells attach to the scalp instead of falling off as they dry. There may be a
relationship with skin yeasts (Pityrosporum ovale, newly renamed Malassezia furfur).
Seborrheic dermatitis is the adult version of cradle cap.
Warning signs
If the condition thickens, turns red and irritated, starts spreading, appears on other body
parts, or if the baby develops thrush (fungal mouth infection), fungal ear infection (an ear
infection that does not respond to antibiotics) or a persistent diaper rash, medical
intervention is recommended.
Severe cases of cradle cap, especially with cracked or
bleeding skin, can provide a place for bacteria to grow. If
the cradle cap is caused by a fungal infection which has
worsened significantly over days or weeks to allow
bacterial growth (impetigo, most commonly), a combination
treatment of antibiotics and antifungals may be necessary.
Since it is difficult for a layperson to distinguish the
difference between sebaceous gland cradle cap, fungal
cradle cap, or either of these combined with a bacterial infection, medical advice should be
sought if the condition appears to worsen.
Cradle cap is occasionally linked to immune disorders. If the baby is not thriving and has
other problems (e.g. diarrhoea), a doctor should be consulted.

The sun is back

At long last we have sunshine. During the past few weeks we have had rain, hail and storms. The veg plots are thriving but so are the weeds so I have been out this morning tidying up. Colin has gone down to Denia to the beach house to scrape the rust off and paint railings on the terrace.
I've just noticed that along with the nice weather comes the flies which are circling in the sitting room. I must put the mosquito nets back at the windows. Last week I decided to use the steam cleaner to clean the kitchen. I also cleaned the windows with it and its great not leaving smears.. Steam cleaners are wonderful and eco friendly because you don't need to use cleaning products.

Making Compost

I keep the bag in a container in the kitchen and when it is full I put it into the compost heap. The bag itself composts which is great. The joy of having the Kaddy and the bags it that it prevents flies gathering in the kitchen and plus saves me having to handle waste. I can just pull the bag out of the bin and put it into the compost.

Understanding reasons for conserving water

Understanding reasons for conserving water

For most of us water is a commodity that we take for granted. Without thinking we use water to wash ourselves, clean our teeth, flush our toilets, wash our clothes, keep our homes clean, water our garden, cook our food and use in our drinks. Water is something that we could not possibly imagine being without and we object when authorities restrict our usage by imposing hose pipe bans etc.  In many respects we are casual about water and as a consequence we waste tons of it every day. After all, we argue, we have a lot of rain, particularly in the UK and we know that a large proportion of the earth’s surface is covered in water. So why should there be a problem in the future?
The reasons why we need to educate ourselves and think more about our water usage is threefold. Firstly according to the USGS Water Science School only three percent of the planets water is fresh water and only one percent is available for drinking. Secondly we know that there has been a change in weather patterns and that global warming is having an impact upon water supplies, hence the needs for hose pipe bans in the UK. Thirdly and perhaps the most sobering fact is that the water supply to our earth has not increased since time began and if we take into consideration the enormous increase in population plus industrialisation it is only common sense to assume that this precious commodity is likely to become scarce and expensive in the future if we do not take steps to conserve it.
Although we can argue that governments and large companies need to take control of this pending disaster, we as individuals can also have an impact on the future by educating our children and thinking more about our water usage.
There are hundred’s of simple ways that we can conserve water for example:
Turn off the tap when cleaning your teeth.
Avoid leaving the tap running, for example when rinsing dishes or washing fruit and vegetable.Use a bowl.
Take a shower rather than a bath and use a water efficient shower head.
Collect rain water to use on your garden.
Only use washing machines and dish washers containing a full load.
Check pipes for leaks and repair
Use dripper systems in your garden to water flowers and vegetables.
Ensure that lawn sprinklers are watering the grass and not the drive.
Leave a bottle of water in the fridge rather than running the tap  each time you want a drink
Speak to your children’s school to encourage teachers to educate children about water usage.
Collect rain water to use on your garden.
These are just a few ideas and if we consider that by turning our taps off when cleaning our teeth we can save approximately eight gallons of water a day then it makes sense to at least try.
We all want future generations to enjoy what we have and by conserving water today we are least making an effort to ensure that affordable water will still be available in the future.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint Essential Oil

Essential oils are extracted from various plant parts like flowers,
leaves, stems, roots, seeds, bark, resin or fruit rinds. Each
plant contains only a tiny percentage of essential oil, so several
kilos of the plant are harvested to extract a few millilitres of
oil. Therefore, these oils are highly concentrated and usually
dispensed in drops, or mixed with a base oil for massages. They
contain hundreds of therapeutic constituents and are used in personal products,
aromatherapy, and for sanitary and healthcare reasons.

Usage
Peppermint essential oil is said to be good for ailments like
asthma, colic, fever, flatulence, headache, nausea, chest
congestion and vertigo. This oil is supposed to be excellent for
mental fatigue and depression, refreshing and stimulating with
its menthol content. It is good for the skin and is used in
lotions to treat sunburn, itchiness or inflamed skin. It helps fight
bad breath and gum infections when used in mouthwashes.
When used in an oil burner it is not only therapeutic it also
keeps away mosquitoes and other insects.

Ancient Wisdom
Peppermint is native to the Mediterranean but is now grown in other
countries in Europe, America, and Asia. Discoveries prove that
peppermint has been used since ancient times in Egypt, Greece,
Rome, China and Japan. According to Greek myth, a nymph called
Mentha was turned, in a fit of anger, into a mint plant by her lover’s wife
Persephone. According to Pliny, peppermint was used to crown
the Greeks and Romans during feasts. It has been used
medicinally in England for the last few centuries.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

An essential oil is a concentrated liquid containing volatile aroma compounds
from aromatic plants. It is usually distilled, sometimes expressed or solvent
extracted. Eucalyptus essential oil is said to be antibacterial, disinfectant and
an analgesic. It has been used to relieve coughs, colds, and other such respiratory
troubles. It soothes muscle and joint pains, and helps to heal wounds,
burns, ulcers and insect bites. In aromatherapy eucalyptus is said to
promote activity, vitality, and energy.

About Wikaniko

Wikaniko was formed to assist everyone to gain a better understanding of the ‘green’ word.

In our minds, there are three shades of ‘green’

Deep green –This is the stage of green living where you begin taking huge life altering steps, giving up all home comforts and really going 'back to basics'. This is great, and should you wish to take this path then more power to you! You are doing a wonderful thing. Who knows one day we may even end up on this path, but for now, we are not deep green.

Light green –This is the kind of ‘bandwagon’ that appears whenever major issues are raised to either scare the public to death, or create some sort of sensationalism to help sell more papers, create more news, etc. Companies and individuals often exploit this, to make a fast buck for themselves. You would be amazed at the number of companies, web sites, publications etc. that pretend to be ‘green’ or environmentally friendly when they have absolutely nothing to contribute to the whole issue!

Mid green –That’s us.

We like to think we are personally doing our bit to help the planet. We use our own products (many of these products have been sourced for Wikaniko because we ourselves found out how good they really were) and we bring the products to you at the keenest prices. Of course we make a profit – we have to in order to stay in business – but we constantly analyse and revise the prices etc to get you better deals, using our increasing buying power.

We recognise that we cannot be totally green with everything that we do. It is impossible to do, so we do not profess to do it. Instead, we are ‘greener’, which means we try our best at all times to ensure our products and services are as green as they can possibly be – or at least, if they are not, the product will still help you in some other more environmentally friendly way.

So please recognise that fact too. Becoming totally green is nigh on impossible. Becoming greener is a major step towards making the world a better place. And as we learn together, we will grow together.

Join us in our never ending quest to help with the growing momentum of this gentle revolution.

Join us in our never ending quest to help with the growing momentum of this gentle revolution.

At Wikaniko, ‘green’ is not being rammed down your throat at every opportunity, just to scare you into buying something. Instead, through a process of education, the supply of information, and explanation, we hope to help you improve your outlook with regard to the environment. Here at Wikaniko we don't just make money. We make a difference. In the short time that we have been in business, our distributor team has already sold a couple of million pounds worth of product, etc.

Never doubt that a small group of committed people can take on the world.

Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has……
