Read how our Geranium Hydrolat skin toner is made
When Making essential oils and during the distillation process, the 'water' fraction of the distillate, containing many of the water soluble fractions of the essential oil (known as the Hydrolat or Floral Water) is collected. This Hydrolat has many of the 'virtues' of the flower and essential oil in a water soluble form, and finds many uses in water-based cosmetic products from skin toners and conditioners to soaps and shampoos.
Used traditionally for haemorrhoids, menorrhagia (blood loss) and ulcers, and Ancient Egyptians used the water from boiled plants to protect them against cancerous tumours.
Used in the bath or in teas, this versatile hydrolat is anti-bacterial, antiviral, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant and relaxing. It is most often used for childhood ailments (chickenpox, mumps, measles, common cold), but is also useful in other viral situations, such as herpes or shingles. In order to help these problems, the hydrolat can be used in a warm bath or applied directly to the skin using cotton pads to relieve itching, blisters and swelling.
Geranium hydrolat is very useful for women who have heavy periods as it is cleansing to the lymphatic system and can help ease congestion and pain. It is known for helping breast congestion, fluid retention and cellulite, as well as menopausal and menstrual problems; this aromatic water is popular with most women.
Skin conditions
Geranium hydrolat is excellent for all skin conditions and can be used in a variety of ways for maximum effect. Acne - Use 10mls of aloe vera gel with 5ml of geranium hydrolat and apply to the cleansed area. Cover with a gauze dampened in the hydrolat if the blend is runny and leave for up to 40 minutes. Use the hydrolat to clean away any of the remaining mask and allow to dry naturally. Repeat this every evening before retiring to bed.
Eczema - Blend 10mls of geranium hydrolat with 30mls of aqueous cream. Massage well into the affected areas at least twice a day.
Psoriasis - Soak cotton cloth with warmed geranium hydrolat and apply as compresses to the affected areas of the body. Leave for at least 30 minutes. After removing the compresses, pat the skin dry and rub away any flakes of skin that have been loosened by the treatment. Apply the eczema blend to complete the treatment, at least twice per day.
Tired skin - Take 20mls of geranium hydrolat with 100mls of warm water daily. Use the hydrolat as a freshener and toner after cleansing the face and before applying moisturiser. Even better effects can be had if 10mls of geranium hydrolat is added to 50mls of your normal moisture cream.
