Great Tip for growing parsnips and carrots

I have just met a guy who gave me some great tips for growing parsnips and carrots. Here in Spain it is hard to grow root vegetables because the ground is stony and therefore carrots and parsnips do not have enough space to grow and become stunted and miss shapened.
I have been advised to get a drain pipe and cut it into sections. Then fill the pipe with soil and make a hole down the centre. Fill the hole with sand. On top of the sand put good composting and place two or three seeds into the soil and cover with compost. The carrot or parsnip grows down the drain pipe into the sand. I'm going to get Colin to find some old drain pipe and give it a go with the seeds I bought from Wikaniko.
